    Dental contract management handbook

The dental contract management handbook was originally designed for use by PCT teams involved in the management of primary care dental contracts.

Since April 2013, NHS England area teams have become responsible for the management of these local contracts. The contract management handbook can still be used by area teams to ensure quality, performance and value for money. After reviewing the content of the handbook it is clear that it still brings together the latest evidence and best practice. It provides a complete set of references and a knowledge map to the latest legislation and guidance and provides practical tools to improve contract management processes.

    11 March 2015

The Department of Health and NHS England have provided a number of documents to support the commissioning and direction of travel for NHS dentistry.

    These include:

    Choosing Better Oral Health (2005)
The action plan sets out to inform and provide support for dental practices as they focus more on preventive care under the 2006 contractual regulations. The plan also assists the commissioning organisations in meeting their responsibilities.

Delivering Better Oral Health edition 3, June 2014 To support the implementation of the Choosing Better Oral Health programme, the government commissioned Delivering Better Oral Health, originally published in 2007 and updated in 2009. Public Health England released the third edition in June 2014. The guidance provides evidence based interventions and new advice on how dental health professionals can improve and maintain the oral and general health of their patients.

  • Contract reform

    11 March 2015

This application process ended at 12:00 noon on 5 February 2015. Further expressions of interest are not being accepted by the dental contract reform programme.

The programme aim to notify applicants by the end of March 2015, but this date will be confirmed at a later stage.

Following the ministerial announcement in April 2014 regarding prototyping, the dental contract reform programme is now calling for expressions of interest for becoming a prototype practice.

The launch document with the overview of prototyping can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dental-reform-next-step and we recommend you read this document before completing the expression of interest form.

Expression of interest forms along with completion notes have been developed for both existing pilot practices and non-pilot practices, together with a supporting information document.

    Dental leadership

    Developing Dental Leadership

PCC is developing training courses to support dentists to become leaders within their profession and more effective leaders in their own practices.

    Making Prevention Work in Practice

The need for greater awareness and capability in preventive activity by clinical teams was supported by the production of Delivering Better Oral Health. PCC has developed a course to support dental leadership within practices and the wider health community by providing training for dentists, key members of the practice team, postgraduate tutors and oral health educators to become trainers in their own right. The course prepares them to train dental care professionals in the provision of appropriate preventive advice and the application of topical fluoride varnish as defined in the GDC Scope of Practice.

Further information including the outcomes of the one day training course and fee structure can be found here.

A successful course was ran in Telford and you can read more about it here.
