NHS standard contract 2017-19 and national variations – action by 31 January

NHS England has published the a new edition of the full length and short form NHS standard contract 2017-19, updated technical guidance, information on national variations and related documents.              

Commissioners must now ensure that the appropriate national variation is implemented for all of their contracts, to take effect from 1 February 2018. Where commissioners are placing new contracts with providers, they must now use the updated versions of the relevant contract.

A report from the Social Market Foundation argues that current social care system is putting pressure on families to step in and provide care for relatives where the state does not. It finds that there are more women with caring responsibilities in the professional and managerial occupations; the number of hours of care that family carers provide is rising overall; and the more hours of care a person provides, the more likely they are to reduce their hours of work or exit the workforce altogether.
