NHS health check 40-64 dementia pilot research findings

A report from Alzheimer’s UK summarises the findings from a pilot project into the effectiveness of dementia risk reduction messaging in NHS health checks. It found that the pilot project showed promise in shifting public awareness and understanding of dementia risk with 75% of participants recalling the advice on dementia risk and 80% reporting that the advice would change their behaviour.

Vaccination target met for the first time

The proportion of eligible children receiving their first dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR1) by their fifth birthday has met the World Health Organisation target of 95% for the first time in England.

Figures from NHS Digital show that the proportion of children receiving the MMR1 vaccine by age five has increased year on year since 2006/07. The target was just missed in 2015/16 when coverage reached 94.8%.

The future of the mental health workforce

A report from the Centre for Mental Health calls for reform to develop a mental health workforce able to meet people's needs in the future. The report describes a crisis in commissioning of mental health services with a diminishing workforce, growing expectations and increasing demand putting pressure on staff across the country. It recommends that all GPs should have significant and wide-ranging mental health training, and that mental health professionals should be given the time and training to consult with GPs and other public service staff to help them to respond to more people’s mental health needs.

NHS payments to general practice, England 2016/17

NHS Digital has published details of NHS payments to individual providers of general practice services in England. Figures are given for the main payment categories which include “global sum” the minimum practice income guarantee (MPIG), balance of PMS expenditure, quality and outcomes framework (QOF) and enhanced services.

The data used for this report covers the period 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017 and includes providers of general practice services that received payments through the NHS Digital GP payments system (NHAIS) and NHS England's integrated single finance environment (ISFE) which captured all CCG and regional local team payments made directly to practices.

Promises to give people control of their care are being broken

New research concludes that, despite two decades of policy promises, NHS services still do not give people adequate control of their own health and care, and there is no reporting of whether people’s care is coordinated across health and social care.

The study, conducted by National Voices, a coalition of over 160 health and care charities, looked at key dimensions of “person-centred care” as reported by patients and service users themselves.

It found that just 3% of people with one or more long-term conditions reported having a written plan for their care and support.
